Virtual program of:edX |
How to make estimates of the energy needs of buildings applying the equilibrium principle and using simple public meteorological data; to be able to make informed decisions about how to increase the energy efficiency of new and existing buildings.
On the energy supply in buildings and possible combinations to increase efficiency with, for example, heat pumps, gas burners, cogeneration, solar energy, fuel cells, geothermal and aquifer thermal storage.
To design building energy systems, they must be designed with the mismatch between demand and supply in mind in order to ensure low primary energy use, low carbon emissions, or even enable zero-carbon buildings and building stock.
How to master good indoor thermal comfort and how it is closely related to the energy systems of buildings, to dimension the energy and comfort equipment of the building,
5 months. 4 - 6 hours per week suggested.
4 virtual courses in soft skills
People spend more than 80% of their time in buildings, so good thermal comfort and the quality of the indoor environment are essential for people's well-being.
At the same time, buildings and their energy systems are responsible for around 40% of energy consumption and carbon emissions worldwide.
In this program, you will learn how to design energy efficient and more sustainable buildings while improving the thermal quality of your interior environment.
This program consists of four courses.
To consider how to increase the energy efficiency of new and existing buildings, you will discover the energy needs and thermal performance of buildings.
You will learn to answer questions such as: how does solar radiation affect heating and cooling needs? Is there such a thing as an optimal window size? or optimal isolation or orientation? What is the impact of ventilation on energy needs? Why do architects sometimes design fully glazed atriums facing north? A building not only has energy needs, but also energy supply.
Therefore, the second course takes you on a journey through the world of energy conversion and related carbon emissions.
You will discover how to convert natural resources into necessary heat, cold and electricity.
This course will give you the skills to choose energy systems for buildings and low carbon building stock.
During the third course, you will learn how to master good indoor thermal comfort and how it is closely related to the energy systems of buildings.
You will be able to answer questions such as under what conditions underfloor heating is comfortable, or why a comfortable temperature also depends on the chosen ventilation system.
Or why there will always be comfort complaints even in building design.
Finally, you will discover how to combine energy supply and storage systems (on land) and how to distribute heat, cold and air in buildings.
You will know why and when to apply an air system, radiators, underfloor heating or cooled ceiling.
You will understand the processes in air handling units and know how to maximize comfort while ensuring carbon emissions are as low as possible.
You will also discover the basics of how to optimally control all of these systems.
