I was recently named a semifinalist for the Grammy Foundation Music Educator of the Year award due to my in-person classes at the university. I am now bringing those classes to Skillshare in an online format to reach more students and bring them the joy of music theory.
For years I have been teaching music theory in the university classroom. These classes I'm doing for Skillshare use the same curriculum I've used in my college classes for years, at a fraction of the cost. I believe anyone can learn music theory, and cost should not be a barrier. I was recently named a semifinalist for the Grammy Foundation Music Educator of the Year award due to my in-person classes at the university. I am now bringing those classes to Skillshare in an online format to reach more students and bring them the joy of music theory. My approach to music theory is to minimize memorization. Most of these concepts can be learned by simply understanding why chords behave in a certain way. Once you understand those concepts, you will be able to find any scale, key, or chord that exists. Even make up your own. This class is a comprehensive class - it will have many parts and will cover my entire year curriculum. This class is Part 3: Minor Keys, The Circle of Fifths, and Composite Meters. Throughout this class, I will provide you with many worksheets to practice the concepts. If you get stuck, you can check out the videos or post a question, and I'll get back to you as quickly as possible. Also in this class, I have several full analysis projects that we will complete together, just like in my college classes. In this class, we will cover: My Approach to Music Theory Tools You'll Need to Learn Music Theory Quickly and Efficiently Key Signatures Diatonic Chord Progressions Trending Chords Using the Circle of Fifths for Writing and Composing Songs Borrowing Closely Related Keys Names of scale degrees Tendency tones Compass Compound Compound Meter Signs Reading and writing Compound measures Triplets, doublets and quadruplets Finding minor keys alternating with major keys Patterns in minor keys Relative minor keys Parallel minor keys Minor keys in the circle of fifths Use of minor keys for writing and composing songs Diatonic chord progressions in minor The V and minor chord and the problem of the main tone Harmonic minor scales Melodic minor scales ...
