Design a cabinet that suits your preferences The main objective of this course is to teach you how to correctly design a cabinet for your loudspeaker.
There is no such thing as "This cabinet is the best fit for this particular speaker."
It must take into account your request and your personal preferences.
Do you want it to sound loud? Do you want it to sound deep and not worry about volume? Do you want it to be as smooth and linear as possible? These are just a few examples of questions you need to answer before you get started.
The end result will always be a compromise between the acoustic qualities of a room.
Only you can decide which sound qualities are most important to you and you should be the one to "move the sliders".
Acoustic Basics This course assumes you have a minimal understanding of acoustics and therefore starts slowly with basic information about sound waves, how they are created and what their characteristics are.
It then goes on to how the loudspeaker is designed and some other relevant information on acoustics.
This is obviously necessary for a beginner, but it's also good for an intermediate level student, as I'm sure you'll also find some new information to make things even clearer.
Enclosure Types Most of the common enclosure types are listed, explaining their principle of operation, advantages and disadvantages of each.
But, we will focus our attention on sealed and bass reflex enclosures.
These are covered in extensive detail on their features and how to design them according to standard alignments, or to complete custom response curves.
Modeling software To model the response curve of the enclosure and calculate the dimensions of the box, two methods will be used.
You will receive an Excel spreadsheet, which has everything you need to model a sealed or bass reflex enclosure with minimal difficulty.
It even has a graph to show you the modeled frequency response.
It is basically a complete package for beginners.
The other method is through a paid app.
There are many loudspeaker design software solutions, but I chose: "Subwoofer Design Toolbox".
The main reasons are: it is cheap, simple, easy to understand and has all the basic functions.
If you are a beginner, it is very important that you start slowly, otherwise you will be overwhelmed by complicated apps with extra features that will only confuse you.
