Did you know that Arabic was for centuries the lingua franca in an area that extends from the south of Spain to the border with China? Did you know that the Middle East under Muslim rule in those days was the beating heart of world trade, but also of science and scholarship? Did you know that Islam in its formative period was heavily influenced by existing cultures in the region, such as Indian, Greek, Persian and Byzantine culture? Did you know that for many centuries after the establishment of the Muslim Empire, the majority of the population remained predominantly Christian and Jewish? Did you know that they had a protected status in Islamic law? Did you know that this generally open-minded, curious and open society spurred many great innovations and inventions? Did you know that European scholarship in the Renaissance relied heavily on Middle Eastern texts and inventions that were the result of this sophisticated advanced society? In this course we will focus on the fascinating history of the Medieval Arab World. We will take you on a journey through the Middle Ages beginning in XNUMXth century Baghdad. Along the ancient pilgrimage roads we will go to places like Mecca, Jerusalem and Najaf. We will show you the impressive markets of places like Cairo and Samarkand. However, we will also not hide the dark sides of society by introducing you to the flourishing and pervasive slave trade. We will visit the Abbasid court, the caliph's harem and the palace of the Mamluk sultan. We will show you some beautiful medieval manuscripts, which endure as silent witnesses to the impressive achievements of the scientists and physicians of this forgotten era. Throughout we will present historiographical debates and dilemmas. Reflect on the way we look at and interpret history. And as we take you on this journey, we'll travel back and forth in time to explain how events of the past affected and shaped the world as we know it today. Thank you to the College of Governance and Global Affairs for offering it on Coursera, the College of Humanities for creating the lovely course content and great reading material. I have rarely seen a MOOC that is so well researched and thought out. This is in addition to the excellent resources provided and creative media. I finished the course and I am currently doing the honor track. If I may introduce myself, I am Radi Radi, a Palestinian-Jordanian living on "Shacharet Al Dur" street in Amman, Jordan. It was quite a coincidence to learn about her here. I work as a pilot and we are not currently flying anywhere so I thought I would finish this course. I am a Bachelor of Civil Engineering from Ryerson University Canada and this really felt like the 100 level electives I took as it really is a college level course. I bought some books that I read about in your course and that means I have something else to do in this corona imposed hiatus. After Once aviation gets back on track, I look forward to flying to Amsterdam again. When that happens, I plan to bring you a gift from Amman for your efforts.
