The complex nature of health services makes managing competing demands with limited resources extremely challenging for health professionals. Several Scottish Government reports have identified the need for health and social care staff to improve their leadership and management skills to provide safe, high-quality care.
In this microcredential, you will develop your understanding of management and leadership theories, and increase your adaptability, creativity, innovation, and analytical skills. You will learn how to ensure collective leadership across staff grades, create effective multidisciplinary teams, and implement efficient ways to promote the health and well-being of communities.
Committing to health economics, equity, and clinical governance, you will assess the organization and delivery of health care services and the principles underlying health services policy. You will also critically assess the role of management and leadership in health services, and analyze the range of human and system failures that cause health organizations to underperform in crisis.
This micro-credential meets the standards established by the Common Micro-Credential Framework.
Understanding the Context of Health Care Administration In Part 1, students will identify the challenges and complexity of health services and critique how they are managed. 5 weeks 10 hours per week

Are you eligible for this microcredential? To join this microcredential you must have both: a relevant university degree with at least a 2.2 honors level or equivalent to a minimum of six months work experience in a healthcare setting. Exceptionally, you can also join if you have a relevant professional qualification and at least two years' experience in the professional practice of health service management.
Is this microcredential right for you? This course is designed for health and social care professionals who would like to pursue or enhance their career in health services management at all levels, from large hospitals to community services. As well as being run by one of the UK's top three medical schools, the course includes contributions from senior NHS staff working in administration and policy who understand how to motivate teams and transform services. Although the main focus will be on healthcare practice in Scotland, international examples of good practice will be included to critically analyze alternative approaches to healthcare.
