Trauma can affect anyone at any time. From bereavement to sudden natural disasters, trauma can leave a lasting impact that can escalate into a variety of disorders if left unmanaged. As our awareness of the importance of mental health and wellness increases, along with public access to psychological interventions, so does the demand for people trained to understand and support mental wellness. In the US alone, the number of psychiatrists is projected to grow by 11% over a ten-year period to 2026.
In this microcredential, you will identify how people who have experienced trauma can be supported with empathy, effectiveness, and professionalism, learning from experts in psychology and psychiatry. Together with staff from the University of Glasgow, you will explore the links between trauma and psychological well-being, investigate the implications of diagnosis, and consider research and evidence, enabling you to make informed decisions about appropriate referrals to other agencies. Ultimately, the course will give you the confidence to open up conversations around the topic of wellness. You will critically appraise the scientific literature to substantiate potential concerns related to post-traumatic adjustment, recognizing psychological distress, and evaluating therapeutic interventions along the way.
This course is an educational resource, not a therapeutic tool. If you feel distressed, in a state of despair or suicide, it is important that you tell someone. Visit the International Association for Suicide Prevention to find crisis centers around the world. We do not provide a treatment or counseling service for people in crisis. This micro-credential meets the standards established by the Common Micro-Credential Framework.
Trauma has been consistently shown to be one of the strongest predictors of developing a mental disorder, and coping responses such as substance use and social isolation can increase the risk of poor general well-being. The course has been organized by a diverse team of academics and psychiatrists from one of the prestigious Russell Groups of the UK's leading research universities, with expertise in global mental health, resilience, attachment, recovery, stigma, domestic violence and HIV. They will help you understand the spectrum of distress, from transient feelings of vulnerability, fear, and sadness, to more disabling psychological conditions that require specialized interventions. You will also learn about evidence-based prevention and treatment options for managing psychological distress.
