Veterinarians play a crucial role in the food chain, and training in 'farm-to-fork' food production is vital to national food security and public health. This microcredential is designed for veterinarians to learn how they can work to ensure food hygiene and safety through sustainable livestock production.
Led by experienced veterinary educators in farm animal health and welfare and public health, you will increase your knowledge and awareness of major national and global threats to animal production and food safety.
As you explore past, present, and future challenges to livestock health and welfare, you'll consider the threats of antimicrobial resistance, epizootic diseases, emerging infectious diseases, and animal welfare challenges. You will evaluate strategies to proactively improve food safety and protect the food supply chain through preventive veterinary medicine. You will also reflect on your professional practice and identify how to create opportunities to better serve your customers throughout the food supply chain, improving animal and human health.

Are you eligible for this microcredential? To join this microcredential, you must be a qualified veterinarian who has a bachelor's degree in veterinary medicine. This course is intended for veterinary professionals working in private farm animals and mixed practices, government veterinary service, and meat hygiene. It will be assessed through online exams that include multiple choice questions, extended matching questions, and clinical decision making questions.
Is this microcredential right for you? This credential is designed for veterinary professionals who want to improve farm animal health and animal welfare and its links to food production. The credential can be used for CPD as required by the RCVS, as an insight into master's level study in veterinary medicine, or to enhance and enhance your employment opportunities in the government veterinary sector. Academic credits earned from this micro-credential can also create interest in completing Glasgow's MSc Food Security and MSc One Health postgraduate programmes.
