Transmedia storytelling is the practice of designing, sharing, and engaging in a cohesive story experience across multiple traditional and digital delivery platforms, for entertainment, advertising and marketing, or social change.
Have you ever read a book, watched a movie, watched a TV show, or played a game that focused on different aspects of a larger story or universe? You may be familiar with popular examples from universes like Star Wars, Marvel, and The Walking Dead (to name a few).
How do professionals develop such expansive narratives? How do you make sure each element stays true to the original story? How do you innovatively use different technologies to share stories, grow viewership, and create an active and engaged fan community? More and more, we are also engaging with larger and more complex story elements or franchises through a much more diverse range of platforms such as interactive web experiences, social media communities, mobile devices, theme parks, and even augmented and virtual reality.
A major challenge facing current and future storytellers is being able to engage different audiences in a story that is told seamlessly across all these different platforms.
WHAT WILL I LEARN? This course will help you design a strategy to develop and tell your own transmedia story.
You'll learn what it takes to: • Shape your ideas into well-structured, compelling narratives and complex story worlds • Identify, understand, and engage different audiences in your stories • Create cohesive user experiences across platforms • Evaluate existing technologies and emerging to share your story with the world and help your audience engage in the larger storytelling world you create. The course provides you with a unique, authentic experience and industry-relevant learning opportunity.
You'll have access to current theory, industry examples and tips, and take learning activities that equip you with the tools you need to start developing your own ideas.
WHO WILL BE MY INSTRUCTORS? You will learn effective transmedia design strategies from UNSW Australia's leading art and design academics.
You'll also examine case studies that demonstrate how amazing ideas, technology, and audience input can come together to create dynamic narrative worlds.
You'll see examples of major and successful transmedia storytelling projects involving film, digital entertainment, gaming, virtual reality, and more.
