Folk magic will be addressed, as well as learned magic (alchemy, geomancy and necromancy).
In addition, we will also address how Eastern texts and practices influenced Western culture.
In July 2016, the course will contain a new module dedicated to astrology.
Magic in the Middle Ages offers a captivating overview of medieval society and encourages reflection on certain stereotypes associated with this period.
At the end of the course, students will: a) have overcome common prejudices about the Middle Ages, b) be able to analyze the historical documentation of the Middle Ages and recognize the most common patterns of legal documents related to witchcraft, and c) will be able to distinguish between popular magic and the magic of scholars; You will have a notion of which spiritual practices were allowed in medieval Europe and which were related to the devil, and you will be aware of the link between a cultural product and the society that produces it.
