The MOOC course "Introduction to Philosophy" available on Coursera, will introduce students to some of the main areas of research in contemporary philosophy. In each module, a different philosopher will guide you through some of the most important questions and issues in his or her area of expertise. It will begin with a focused attempt to understand what philosophy is, what its distinctive aims and methods are, and how it differs from other subjects. We will then spend the rest of the course getting an introductory overview of several different areas of philosophy.
DESCRIPTION
TOPICS THAT THE COURSE WILL ADDRESS
- Epistemology, where we will consider what our knowledge of the world and of ourselves consists of, and how we come to have it
- Philosophy of science, where we will investigate fundamental conceptual issues in scientific research and practice
- Philosophy of Mind, where we will ask questions about what it means for something to have a mind, and how minds are to be understood and explained
- Political philosophy, where we will investigate whether we have an obligation to obey the law
- Moral philosophy, where we will try to understand the nature of our moral judgments and reactions, whether they point to some objective moral truth, or are merely personal or cultural preferences
- Metaphysics, where we will explore some fundamental conceptual questions about free will and the nature of reality.
This course has been developed by the Eidyn Research Center at the University of Edinburgh.
