Counting is one of the basic math-related tasks that we encounter in everyday life.
The main question here is the following.
If we need to count something, can we do better than just count all the objects one by one? Do we need to create a list of all phone numbers to ensure there are enough phone numbers for everyone? Is there a way to know that our algorithm will run in a reasonable amount of time before actually implementing and running it? All of these questions are addressed by a mathematical field called Combinatorics.
In this course, we discuss most of the standard combinatorial configurations that can help answer questions of this type.
We will focus especially on developing the ability to distinguish these configurations in real life and in algorithmic problems.
This will help the student to really implement new knowledge.
Apart from that, we will discuss the recursive counting technique that is important for algorithmic implementations.
One of the main 'consumers' of Combinatorics is Probability Theory.
This area is connected to numerous aspects of life, on the one hand, it is an important concept in everyday life, and on the other hand, it is an indispensable tool in such modern and important fields as statistics and machine learning.
In this course we will concentrate on providing a working knowledge of the basic concepts of probability and a good intuition in this area.
Practice shows that such intuition is not easy to develop.
At the end of the course, we will create a program that successfully plays a tricky and highly counterintuitive dice game.
As prerequisites, we assume only basic math (for example, we hope you know what a square is or how to add fractions), basic python programming (functions, loops, recursion), common sense, and curiosity.
Our target audience is everyone who works or plans to work in IT, starting with motivated high school students.
